Winter Haulage 2024

Applications must be received by 30th April to guarantee a slot.  Late applications will be accepted at the discretion of the Haulage Master.

All haulees must attend the Working Bee Sat 4th May, including the haulage briefing. Haulage is expected to start Sunday 5th May.

Description of Haulage

Devonport Yacht Club, based in Torpedo Bay Devonport, offers its Full club members the opportunity to haul their own boats on the section for repair and maintenance.

There are two types of haulage:

  1. Winter haulage is a long-term haulage option where boats are moved into position on the club site.  This operation starts in May and finishes by the beginning of December.

  2. Summer haulage is short term – typically no more than three weeks – and boats stay on the trolleys for the duration.  For summer haulage a universal cradle is installed on the East trolley and adjusted for each boat.  The west trolley is also available, but the boat owner must organize the cradle.  Once boats being hauled for the winter are on the section the universal cradle is re-installed and both slipways are available for short term haulage over winter.

Haulage is a communal effort and haulees are expected to participate, helping haul boats of other members.  It typically requires seven or eight members for each side haul.  The owner is responsible for haulage of their own boat with expert club members available for support.

To book in for haulage the owner must complete an application form and pay a deposit of $100.  Details are then arranged by communicating with the Haulage Master (Details below).  Costs of haulage and detailed haulage rules are available elsewhere under the haulage pages and are also downloadable.

Before Winter Haulage begins the club has a working bee which includes a briefing for owners of boats being hauled.  This is a compulsory meeting that all owners must attend.  If this is not possible the Haulage Master must be notified before the meeting.

Storage

There is some limited storage on the site.  The west side of the section has storage for dismantled cradles and lockers are available with strict rules attached (see section on lockers).  Access to storage onsite is controlled by the Haulage Master and locker allocation by the site manager.
